The other day I shared an order of yarn for some tiny human knits I’m planning. And that yarn has arrived from Simply Sock Yarn Company – here’s my initial thoughts…
Madelinetosh Tosh DK
Madelinetosh Tosh DK in color Life On Mars (brown with a lovely orange tone) and color Plaid Blanket (a wild mix of greys, greens, and orange). The colors are spectacularly brilliant and exactly as I’d hoped for. Kudos to SimplySockYarn.com for posting accurate photos for online shopping.
Tosh DK is a superwash 100% Merino. It feels soft enough but not super slippery. It’s a very round yarn with a matte appearance. I picked it specifically for cables and think it will show excellent definition. Stay tuned… you know I’ll be posting updates once it’s on my needles.
Details on Tosh DK are 225yds (205m) for a 4oz (113g) skein.
Malabrigo Rios
This is Malabrigo Rios in color Almond Blossom. It’s a pale pink that has a bit of a peachy hue.
Rios is listed as a Worsted weight yarn. Like the Tosh DK, it is a superwash 100% merino yarn.
I used Rios for several Worsted Wonderland Hats last Christmas. I know it knits up beautifully and is super soft and squishy. In comparison, it does have more of a sheen than the Tosh DK.
Emma’s Yarn Sock Minis
I’ve never worked with Emma’s Yarn before and I’m excited to give it a try. It has a visible twist to it and it’s super soft. Hopefully it will knit up as bouncy as it appears in the skein.
I had absolutely no pink in my stash and went a little wild with all the color choices that were available. And hey, who doesn’t like a pile of gorgeous mini’s to play with! Some will become Tiny Toes Baby Socks and others will be a scrappy surprise.
*Also, I am totally keeping up with my goal for project and stash updates on Ravelry this year – you can check it out here if you’d like!
Overall Feelings
I’m always honest with reviews as I am never sponsored by brands or shops I review. I purchased this order with no discounts. Fun fact: I actually paid more than I should have…I explain this below!
Service and Selection – Simply Sock Yarn: Excellent selection of in-stock yarns and colors. The time from order to ‘shipped’ is super fast.
One gripe though… as I mentioned I ended up paying $6.00 for shipping. My order more than exceeded the advertised “free shipping on orders over $100.” I looked into it after I placed my order and there is small print that says you have to select the free shipping option or you’ll be charged normally. Hmm… I can’t help but think this must be a website setting issue that it won’t magically apply? Either way, I thought it stinks. I’m happy to pay shipping, but if it’s offered free, it should be more clear how to get it. Or, maybe I shouldn’t rush through checkout because I’m so excited about the yarn… 🤔
The Packaging: I’m all for reduced packaging to cut down on waste, but my yarn was super-smashed into the bags. Of course it all fluffed up once I freed it from the plastic torture, but it was slightly disturbing to see it crammed in bags like it was. It won’t stop me from shopping from this store again, but it surprised me so I’m sharing.
