How to pick up the stitches from a provisional cast on

Getting your provisional cast on back onto the working needles is simpler than it may look.

Note: Stitches are the V … not the mountain /\ – I mention this a lot but it’s worth it. If you’re looking at the mountains you’re seeing half of two stitches and it’ll cause some issues. V V V !

Getting Started

Begin at the end with the scrap yarn single crochet chain. Find that first stitch. The right side of the stitch goes on the needle (leave the left side of the V alone…).

Keep going until all the stitches are on the needle. Double check that you only pick up the right sides of the Vs. The stitches on the needle now should all lean the same direction.

Goodbye, Scrap Yarn

Undo the crochet chain then start pulling your scrap yarn.

This is wonderfully satisfying! All the fun of frogging without having to redo anything. Bliss!

That’s it!

Now you can do whatever you like with the first row of stitches. If you’re working the collar for a sweater, just start working the pattern. If you used the provisional cast on for a grafted, invisible seam, check out my Simplified Kitchener technique here!
