Delightful to knit, absolutely marvelous to wear, the Year Round Shorty Socks are finally here!
The How and Why…
How did this design come to be? As with many of my ah-ha inspiration moments, it began with the yarn. I had not-very-much left of an absolutely divine skein of hand-dyed yarn. The kind of yarn you would knit anything with because it feels so nice on the needles. Yup, I know you know what I’m talking about. There definitely wasn’t enough for a full pair of socks and probably not enough for a hat. So, shorty socks seemed like a logical choice.
Why are there these simple garter stripes running down the foot? Well, that’s simple. I get sort of … bored, I suppose … knitting ‘vanilla’ socks. I wanted just a little something to add some interest. A couple garter stripes seemed perfect for this mini pair of socks.
A Rolled Cuff? Sure, why not.
Most of my shorty socks have a standard ribbed cuff, but this little pair needed to fit under my ankle. Rolled cuffs are cool. Remember the ones from the 1980’s with the pom-pom on the back? Yeah, that’s what I was going for, but maybe a more… grown-up, modern version.
All the Details
Year Round Shorty Socks are a pretty basic sock. Any beginner sock knitter can handle the details in this pattern. Quick little rolled cuff, mini leg, heel flap and turn, gusset, foot, and wedge toe. It’s a lickety-split quick knit for sure. No row counter required (unless you really want one). Once you set the pattern sections, the knit is very easy to read and follow.
The Pattern
I had a real quandary about publishing this pattern. The pattern couldn’t be more simple and any experienced knitter can look at these pictures and surely figure it out. But, not everyone has knit a bunch of socks (yet). This is a great way to start! The pattern has all of my tried and true sock techniques. All the ones that I can’t knit any sock without using. Even other designers’ patterns, I insert these tricks, they are just that good!
So, rather than post it as a completely free pattern with minimal details, I wrote up a full pattern and priced it (forever) at a super low amount. This way, you get all the tricks you need to knit neat and tidy socks of any design, plus you can knit a pair of this little darlings. And believe me, you should, they are seriously amazing.
The MOST Comfortable Shorty Socks EVER
See those garter stripes? They were supposed to keep me entertained as I knit, but once I slipped these socks on they revealed themselves to be oh-so-important to the fit! They give just a teensy bit of extra stretch from side to side right where I need it the most. These shorties stay on my feet, no rolling down in the back. And when my feet swell… like super puffy… they still are the most comfortable socks ever.
Garter stripes… who knew?!
